SnapIt Screen Capture Utility Review

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

If you use images in blog posts, web pages, articles, etc. you know the value of a screen capture utility. Personally I’ve been using one for years and I use it frequently. It’s integrated into a graphics editor which means I have to open my graphics editor whenever I want to take a screen snapshot, activate the capture feature, capture the image into the graphics editor, and then save it to disk.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have an independent screen capture utility that’s always available on demand no matter what you’re doing. It would save multiple steps, and more importantly, time.

Enter SnapIt from Digeus Software. SnapIt runs in the background and places a shortcut in the Windows system tray. Right-clicking on the shortcut opens the SnapIt main menu.

No matter what you’re doing SnapIt is instantly available with a single, user-selectable hot-key. Press the key and your cursor changes to a “+”. Click and hold the left mouse button and drag to draw a rectangular marquee around the area of the screen you want to capture. Release the mouse button and the image is saved to the clipboard, and optionally also saved to a file on disk in a user-definable location.

The graphics format the snapshot is saved in is also user-selectable, including JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG and BMP.

According to Digeus, SnapIt is compatible with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, XP, 2000, 2003, Vista x32,/x64, and Windows 7. I tested it on Windows Vista with a variety of applications from text editors to high-end graphics applications and it performed flawlessly in every case.

I love my graphics editor but I’ll no longer be using it just for the screen capture feature. SnapIt represents the union of simplicity, functionality, and affordability.
